First documented in Delaware in 2000, glyphosate-resistant marestail has spread to more than 3.3 million acres in the United States. According to a University of Delaware study, growers have been able to successfully manage the problem, but they have paid a price.
Increased production costs:
- 43 percent reported a $2 to $7 per acre increase to implement changes
- 20 percent reported an $8 to $15 per acre increase
Devaluation of GT systems
- 59 percent believed the presence of glyphosate-resistant marestail decreases the value of GT technology
Glyphosate-resistant marestail management solutions:
2,4-D and Gramoxone Inteon™, and dicamba make an excellent alternative burndown tankmix for corn. Soybean solutions include a burndown of 2,4-D, Gramoxone Inteon™ and Canopy® or in-season applications of FirstRate®. Tilage is also another weed control option.
